The New International Version (NIV) is a completely new translation of the Holy Bible made by more than one hundred scholars working from the best available Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts.
Originally conceived in 1965, translation work began and was commissioned in 1967 by the Committee on Bible Translation, sponsored by the New York Bible Society, which later became the International Bible Society.
The translation of each book of the Bible was done in three stages: First, a team of scholars translated the book based on the most accurate original languages. Second, each book was thoroughly looked at by several committees, which reviewed stylistic qualities as well as its adherence to the original languages. Finally, the Committee on Bible Translation made a final revision to insure that it was not only an accurate translation, but also one that would have clarity and literary quality.
The New Testament was completed and published in 1973. The entire Bible was published in 1978, with additional changes incorporated in 1983.
